New Graduate Nurse Residency Program

Barton Health is excited to offer the New Graduate Nurse Residency Program.

The New Graduate Nurse Residency Program is an interactive, year-long program assisting new graduate nurses in their transition to professional practice. The program focuses on development of clinical, critical thinking, and leadership skills. This program is supported by, and part of, the HealthStream Nurse Residency Program.

Program Overview

  • One year program
  • New nurses partner with trained and certified preceptors throughout the clinical orientation (length based on department)
  • Simulation, classroom, and online content using Artificial Intelligence promotes individualized learning

Program Objectives

  • Facilitate the development of the novice nurse to a professional, competent nurse who provides quality, safe care.
  • Prepare the nursing graduate to care for patients in the hospital setting.
  • Promote enhanced critical thinking and assessment skills.
  • Foster effective communication skills to a key player on the healthcare team.
  • Ensure evidence-based practice is incorporated in care of all patients.
  • Develop effective communication and decision-making skills related to clinical presentation.
  • Encourage the development of clinical and leadership skills to create a nursing foundation that promotes a lifelong commitment to the profession.

Program Areas

New graduate nurse residents can apply to a department based on the following criteria: background and interest of the applicant, needs and availability within Barton Health, and nursing school practicum hours in specialty areas. New graduate nurse residency opportunities may be available in the following areas:

  • Medical/ Surgical & Orthopedics Department
  • Specialty Areas:
    • Emergency Department
    • Intensive Care Unit
    • Perioperative Department (Pre-op and Post Anesthesia Care Unit)
    • Surgery Department - Operating Room (OR)

Note: specialty areas require previous experience in that specialty area in a non-RN role or completion of one's nursing school practicum in the specialty area of interest or in a critical care department.

Program Eligibility

  • Graduated from an accredited nursing program
  • Must have California RN License prior to program start date
  • Must commit to the entire one-year New Grad Nurse Residency Program
  • Must have less than one year paid RN experience, and/ or graduated from an international school of nursing

 December 17 - January 15, 2022 April 4, 2022
 May 15 - June 15, 2022 September 2022 (exact date TBD)

Note: The exact start date is subject to change, based on organizational needs.

Application Requirements

  1. Complete an application(s) for a New Graduate Nurse Resident position.
  2. Submit unofficial transcript(s).
  3. Submit a letter of recommendation from a nursing school professor, clinical instructor, or practicum preceptor who can speak to one's potential success in the nursing profession.
  4. It is highly recommended that the applicant submit a resume and cover letter.
  5. Please include your NCLEX date or CA RN license application date, if you do not have your CA RN license. *You must have your CA RN license by the program start date.
  6. BSN highly preferred

Note: the program is one year in length and all new graduate nurse residents are expected to complete the program in its entirety. This includes attending all mandatory classes and seminars throughout the program. Throughout the program, a new graduate nurse resident might have to work up to 40 hours a week during orientation weeks that contain classes and seminars and will be required to rotate shifts to orient onto the night shift.

Interview Process

  1. You will be contacted by Barton Health if you are selected to be interviewed. Please note, due to the large volume of applicants, not all applicants will receive a phone call or an interview.
  2. The initial interview (typically via Zoom) will be held by the department director or manager.
  3. The follow-up interview will be a panel interview with the department director or manager, department staff, and/or Clinical Educators.
  4. If selected for a New Graduate Nurse Resident position, you will be contacted by a Human Resources recruiter to discuss the offer details, benefits information, and review the new hire onboarding process.
