Kristi Jouett: Keeping student athletes in the game

Posted: 05/30/2019

Even though school is almost out for the summer, if you have children that play sports it’s time to start thinking ahead to next year. Participating in student athletics promotes mental and physical well-being; which is why Barton Health is offering free sports physicals for student athletes at the Center for Orthopedics & Wellness on Monday, June 3, from 5 – 6:30 p.m.

As part of its commitment to community health, Barton hosts an annual event to provide free sports physicals for all local student athletes. South Tahoe Middle School and High School students, Pop Warner athletes, Lake Tahoe Community College student athletes, as well as George Whittell middle and high school students are invited to participate. Students under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian present, and should bring the necessary sports physical form from their coach or school.

Barton physicians and care providers will be screening vitals: vision, height, weight, and blood pressure as required or recommended by athletic programs in the area. Students and parents can also discuss any orthopedic concerns with Barton orthopedists while being screened. These free sports physicals do not replace children’s Annual Preventative Exam, however, they are a great opportunity for parents if their child is healthy overall and simply needs basic vitals checked in order to participate in extracurricular sports.

No appointment is necessary the day of the screenings, and community members can arrive for their sports physicals during suggested time slots for each student group:

  • 5:00 p.m. for South Tahoe High School students with last names A-L
  • 5:30 p.m. for South Tahoe High School students with last names M-Z
  • 6:00 p.m. for South Tahoe Middle School students and Pop Warner participants
  • 6:30pm for Whittell High School and Middle Schools, Lake Tahoe Community College and Tahoe Hockey Academy
